Urban Rooftop Farming - A Plan for the Restaurant Savoy in Helsinki
Rooftops form a greatly underutilized space in cities. Rooftop agriculture could contribute to the sustainable development of cities and provide citizens with eco-friendly food. Rooftop farming also plays an important role in the ecology of the city.
I designed a rooftop farm for restaurant Savoy in Helsinki. They started cultivation on their terrace last spring and are now considering setting up a larger terrace garden to the next rooftop to produce more local food for the restaurant.
My thesis is part of a project called ‘Viherkatot osaksi kaupunkia’ (Green Roofs in Urban Areas), which is conducted by the Finnish Museum of Natural History and Urban Ecology Research Group.
