Still from a video

I have observed national identity and the way it is placed in conduct, thoughts and values, at the same time questioning the importance of these practices of building one-self.  The work consists of videos and photographs.

I shot the first video piece in the summer of 2010, during the Ox-Bow residency in Michigan, United States. I projected scenes from Teuvo Tulio's film ‘The Song of the Scarlet Flower’ (1938) to a screen that I had placed in the landscape. I took photographs at my birthplace in Savitaipale, placing candles in the walls of barns and sheds that had been left useless. The third moving image piece is about performing and the roles connected to cultural and national references.

The work was supported by AVEK (The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture).
