‘Soita Mummolle’ (Call your grandma), is a social campaign aiming to raise awareness of seniors’ loneliness in Finland. Roughly tested as a student group idea in 2009, it became a real grassroots campaign in 2010, using guerrilla marketing tactics and social media to craft a highly interactive but low-budget campaign.

The idea was to tackle the issue of an aging and often lonely population with a soft approach, by finding the “improbable” message ‘Call your grandma’ on the street. People were simply asked to act in first person, by donating and publishing their own “support picture” online, showing the ‘Soita Mummolle’ sign or by participating in the final flash mob, where they could call their elderly relatives for free. The campaign stayed online through its blog and its populous Facebook page, creating a word of mouth chain.

In MoA, the audience is also asked to participate. At ‘Soita Mummolle’ installation you can donate your support picture by webcam, holding on the ‘Soita Mummolle’ sign and saying ‘cheese’! The photo will be automatically published on Flickr, continuing the real experience in the online world.

‘Soita Mummolle’ is a project at the crossroads of visual communication, activism and research. The focus is on personal action, both on the side of the designer and of the audience: positive action can change the way we live and think. The keywords are ‘thinking by doing’ and ‘design for the real world’.
