What is MoA?

The Masters of Arts (MoA) festival is a meeting place and a showcase

During its lifetime, MoA has transformed, developed and changed its location.

Nonetheless, it has always been an event where new art and design professionals meet the public and the business community. This spring, MoA will include a new entity called ‘Extended’. It consists of the work of graduating masters of business and technology who now, for the first time, have the opportunity to participate in MoA.

The festival shows the public a wide array of works: everything from distinguished theses, individual statements, concepts and products arising from commercial collaboration to works of art. All this in perfect harmony!

For the graduating students the exhibition is an opportunity to interact with society, future employers, the media and other influential parties.

Masters of Arts will bring visibility to businesses and other partners, together with an opportunity for networking and dialogue with experts in the creative sector and a new generation of art graduates.

The projects of most of the graduates participating in the exhibition have been inspired by human life, irrespective of the field of study. The thesis projects examine the needs and experiences of users and consumers, renew user interfaces and focus on creating services and more ecological environments for divergent target groups. What will our future homes, summer cottages, offices, libraries, hospitals and sheltered homes be like? The thesis projects of the art and design students portray the diversity of human life.

In addition to the exhibition, MoA offers a varying program with seminars, discussions, films, workshops and guided tours. This spring’s MoA and the ‘Extended’ entity also provide a taster of next year’s major event, where the entire range of Aalto University’s know-how will be presented under the same roof.

Why MoA?

The Masters of Arts festival is a celebration as well as a tour de force of the new Masters

The years of striving for a Master's degree in a prestigious university deserve a worthy finish: a final rehearsal before taking off toward a dream career.

MoA is the collective effort of the graduating generation to make visible the richness of ideas and the creative energy of the whole university. These are essential ingredients of our brand, of the message we send out to potential students from Finland and abroad to join this exciting and creative community. For the first time in the history of the united Aalto University, art and design are no longer the only fields participating in MoA. The festival is now more diversified than ever due to the thesis projects by students from the School of Economics and the schools of technology. Masters of Arts is heading towards the goal of Aalto University: an event where art and science meet business and technology.

Years of experience have shown that MoA increases students' motivation to graduate. Everyone wants to stand together on this platform that oozes with creativity. The grand event often results in new businesses when the participating students find partners with similar ideas and ambitions. MoA expands the impact of our work.

Masters of Arts is a forum that supports creating contacts with potential employers, and there are plenty of examples where new possibilities have opened up thanks to the festival. From the viewpoint of the School of Art and Design, MoA is a tool for measuring the quality of our education and research and also the relevance of our work. Our partners, sponsors and the media are able to assess whether the Aalto University School of Art and Design has succeeded in the task that has been assigned to it.

Furthermore, MoA demonstrates the international connectedness of the School and the varied co-operation the School maintains with various businesses, cultural institutions and other universities. The seminars at MoA reflect the relationship between contemporary discussion and the presented works, placing them in a greater context.

MoA offers a new, interesting and creative way for companies to collaborate. We also wish to attract companies whose products or services are not commonly related to arts, design or visual culture. We see design and the creative know-how as an essential part of companies' competitiveness and operations. MoA not only offers companies the visibility during the festival but also a possibility to create new networks with the professionals of creativity and an unique dialogue with the graduating masters of arts.
