Dining in Diaspora -
a collection of printed kitchen-textiles for Afghan homes in Helsinki

My project is about the cultural identity of Afghan migrant youths in Helsinki. In my thesis, I studied the ways I could apply printed kitchen-textiles into their everyday life in order to reinforce their cultural background.

Considering textiles as products that can recreate memories of childhood or a homeland that was never seen, I suggested a print collection that on one hand uses kitchen-textiles as a medium to emphasize the rich food culture of Afghanistan, and on the other hand draws inspiration from Afghan crafts and heritage, helping the youths to relate to their original culture. Themes of this collection are 'Glorious Treasures', inspired by ancient treasures and crafts of Afghanistan, and 'Memory Garden' which pictures the joy of Afghan nature.
