Bring on the next generation - an analysis of the regenerated Hakaniemi market square
This project aims to develop a new spatial and environmental idea for the town square in the Hakaniemi area. The most interesting aspect of this project is its focus on cultural, environmental and economical issues. Combined with a spatial idea to develop the town square, these elements also take into consideration the history, which carries on the old local culture until this day and age.
The best-known features of Hakaniemi include a large and lively marketplace and right next to it an old-fashioned indoor market. The commerce is especially active during summer time. While these functions are important at the town square, bona fide ideas, such as development and promotion of new user,- and environment friendly functions of this large space should not be disregarded.
The space can perform many different tasks, which effectively relate to the modern life-styles of people. Therefore, it is important to maintain new perspective ideas, which deliberate new functions for the future as a cultural, environmental element of the architecture in Helsinki.
Next generation of the town square will promote the social life of Finnish people with comfort, activities and new images. It will also actively promote and pursue the economic revitalizations and enhancements of local business, creation of new business opportunities and cohesiveness of the neighbourhood.
The final achievement of this project is the maintenance of small-street culture as important inheritance in Helsinki.
