KliM is a freestanding shelf system designed for homes and office spaces alike. The design aims are visual and physical lightness, easy assembly, beauty and structural strength. The shelf boards are made from a paper-based material newly developed as part of my thesis, together with the shelf.
The material idea has been inspired by milk packaging. I am fascinated by paper, its surprising strength, when folded in the right way, together with its softness and lightness. Two parts made of form-pressed carton board create a hollow board, very light but strong. The design of the shelf system displays equal care for overall function and details, visually as well as for touching and physical handling. It was very interesting, too, to realise that a shelf system could be filled with so many different things, being used for display or storage, from books and folders to collections or tools. Each use would give it a different appearance, adding another layer to the character of the design. The well-known general principle of the construction, with diagonals keeping the shelf straight, has been reinterpreted in a surprising, even innovative way. Material and shelf system were developed in close interconnection but could as well be both seen as independent outcomes, each with their own potential for further development.
