| Vasja Urh Applied Art and Design 1979, Slovenia Toolness The aim of the Toolness book is to explore functional and “emotional” values of tools. Because of close connection between humans and tools through time, and the fact that tools played a substantial part in human development, the author explores an assumption that human values and those of tools are the same.
This hypothesis takes the reader from early evolution of man, human culture and technology, towards exploring modern age functional and non-functional values related to tools (Simplicity, Customization, Authenticity...). Since human accomplishments are accomplished using tools, toolness can be seen as a condition of humanity and its measure. “A man with a tool has the value of a tool”. The “ness” of a tool is the essence of a tool. It’s when a tool becomes part of us, part of our way of thinking. Toolness is a new understanding of tools, not only as extensions of human body, but an extension of human will to achieve. The book serves as a tool to break the usual framework of thinking and give a new perspective on tools, consumption and relations between objects and people.
