The theme of my thesis is the concept of sublime. My technique is to use video, oil painting and sound together. Video image is projected on a painting, which results in the merger of the two. Background ideas of my work can already be found in romanticism – in romantic painting in particular, which has actually contributed both to the subject and tone of my paintings.

The concept ‘sublime’, in short, refers to confronting of a natural or other phenomenon causing a sense of understanding or feeling of an emotion, how limited one’s being or understanding is, a sense of awe. Experience of sublime is of something of greater power than oneself, overwhelming, magnificent and not under one’s control. I, contrary to this, try to approach this experience more plainly. I think the sublime can be discovered in an ordinary presence of a landscape, ‘gaze’ I call it, which to me suggests the presence of some being that nevertheless escapes definition.
Sound was created by musician Tuukka -Vuorinen.
