My thesis is a mentalhistorical analysis of Osamu Tezuka’s (1928-1989) manga- and anime character Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) from the 1950’s. Tetsuwan Atomu is a robot that runs with nuclear power and looks like a little boy. In the early manga and anime the stories of Tetsuwan Atomu take place in the fictional 21th century Japan, where robots live among people. Now 2009 this utopia of human-like robots is a bit closer to the reality. In Japan, in the ”Robot Kingdom”, fictional and real robots are important part of the culture. In my work I analyse Tetsuwan Atomu as a part of the history of Japanese technological culture. Through Tetsuwan Atomu I analyse the interaction between real and fictional robots in Japan.
