Fantasy Literature Through the Eyes of a Graphic Designer

My thesis project consists of fifteen black and white illustrations, in ink, and a coloured map for a novel-lenght fantasy trilogy titled The Enchanted Girl. The story is written by me. In the theoretical part, I researched illustrations and graphic design for fantasy literature. I interviewed different professionals from the world of fantasy literature.
Paradoxically, the biggest weakness in fantasy illustration is the lack of imagination. There are no rule books saying that, for example, a wizard has to carry a magic wand, dress in a robe and long pointy hat with exciting astrological motives. He could as well wear a Stetson hat and a long coat. He would appear without beard, and still look like a credible wizard.

On the one hand, in my work I point out how to illustrate fantasy differently. On the other hand, I develop my theory of character design, and a theory about appropriate characteristics (eg. size, details, number of elements) of illustration for a novel-size book.
