Super Block

Museum of Contemporary Art Saint Petersburg
The subject of my thesis is The Museum of Contemporary Art in Saint Petersburg. The idea of the project is to construct the new museum of contemporary art by using available spaces in existing block of houses located in historical city center and to integrate it with the existing museums.
I propose to use all the available buildings of the block and to transform them into the new exhibition spaces. The new connecting system creates a single multifunctional museum complex: SUPER BLOCK, where old and new museums would be both available.
A single entrance provides access to all existing museums located in the block as well as to The Museum of Contemporary Art. A system of bridges, escalators, elevators and staircases connects various levels of museums and forms a continuous sequence of spaces. In addition the longest bridge connects the northern part of the block with the southern part and gives a panoramic view to the city center.
In my final thesis I focus on the complexity of a task of introducing the new functions in the historical canvas of the city. And I also highlight the strength of the existing urban space for creating The Museum of Contemporary Art.
