Pihapalapeli (YardPuzzle) ‚Äď particitopary design in public space

Pihapalapeli (YardPuzzle) is a concept for participatory design in the urban setting. The concept is based on the idea that design processes in public spaces should include user participation in order to be sustainable.

Pihapalapeli is a series of prototype furniture, which can be used in developing a common yard in co-operation with residents. This interactive intervention helps bringing various viewpoints by a number of individuals into open discussion. Pihapalapeli also functions as a design tool, enabling visualization of the space and its potential.
The sites used in the project are empty, unused yards ‚Äď spaces in between. My thesis suggests that the yards could be developed into a common and interactive environments that acts as an extension of the home-space. My thesis states that a good yard can add value to living in a city.

My thesis is also about extending the role of the designer beyond product-centered design to design of public spaces and common experiences. It is a model of process-based design, where designers role is of an organizer and director. The result of the process is immaterial; a new model for action or thinking, instead of a new product.
