His Master’s Shoes

This thesis consists of a user-centered design and manufacturing project for a pair of men´s leather shoes in the province of Veneto in Italy during spring 2007 and post-project reflection on the experiences and theoretical interpretation. The perspective is phenomenological and the work belongs to the sphere of design orientated studies. In this study the particular components of emphasis are on the ecological, esthetic and ethical issues of design – in my study I use the name “3E”.
Through reflecting and the narrative writing the work focuses on the personal experiences of the designer, the cobbler’s professional education and the professional identity.
Our personal needs are connected not only to our social environment but also to the global productions of articles. The need to build up our personal identity is emphasized in postmodern westerner behavior. Through my study I am raising the topic, if we would be capable of effecting our wellbeing through our consuming habits. The effects of our personal choices are probably much greater than we dare to confess. The responsibility is very big, both on the designer and also on the consumer.
