Design Casting
This thesis was done in collaboration with the extreme sports company Suunto. It is an exploration into the life styles of mountaineers and wilderness backpackers. Using user-driven design practices, participants of the thesis were invited to contribute along a time line of the work. Expert interviews and probe packages gathered necessary information involving the lives of the user groups while affinity diagrams and personas translated the material into meaningful data. A new approach to the design process, referred to as design casting, outlined the valued data extraction that is based on three concrete metaphors: perform, bait and support. This thesis seeds a basis for increasing user contribution in gathering participant data. In the end, the concept designs discarded traditional navigation techniques and the result is a unique perspective to navigation by story telling.
