Handmade in Namibia
My Masters thesis Handmade in Namibia aims to provide a fresh view on design services practiced in social context. The written part is a chronological documentation and analysis of the productive work periods that took place in Namibian artisan communities in 2004–2006. I present two product development cases that picture the processes of social design collaboration. The cases introduce different actors of the Namibian crafts and design scene.

During the practical work, I tried to find answers to the following questions: how can local producers, with limited access to information and technology, develop products for global consumers? Could designers work as mediators in this issue? What kind of niche products could be created by introducing new practices to chosen artisan communities?
