Halal Fashion?
‘I look up to Prophet Mohamed’s way of life, but in clothing…Well Beyonce looks pretty nice.’

Halal Fashion? is an expedition to the values, feelings and clothing of 24 young Finnish Muslim women. Religion and interest in fashion can be combined and there is demand for up to date collections respecting the Islamic codes of clothing more than the supply on the market can deliver. The diversity among the young women is however vast and the rules for clothing are interpreted in various different ways.

Religion, different cultures, aesthetics, sociality and ethnicity are combined in the lifestyles of these young Finnish Muslim women into postmodern identities which fearlessly surf in a changing environment. In Halal Fashion? contradictions create harmony and religion makes people free and happy consumers.

The fashion photographs on display in the MoA exhibition are in dialogue with the research. The models in the photographs are the young women who took part in the research.
