THE CLASSICS MEET THE TALENT OF THE FUTURE
Eames by Vitra is an exhibition associated with the MoA festival that presents a diverse look at the furniture designs of Ray and Charles Eames. The aim is to establish a dialogue between the lifework of the Eameses and the works and ideas of freshly graduated furniture designers.
The Finnish organiser of the exhibition is Artek, which is also launching a substantial cooperation effort with the Masters of Arts Festival through this event. Ever since it was founded in 1935, Artek has strived to enrich and broaden the cultural life of Finland by arranging international exhibitions of design, architecture and art.
The husband-and-wife team of Ray and Charles Eames began their cooperation in the 1940s. They identified a need for inexpensive, but high-quality furniture that could be mass produced. Functionality and practicality were their priorities during four decades of experiments using different materials, such as plywood, fibreglass and steel mesh. Their most famous designs are the Lounge Chair and the Aluminium Chair, both of which will be on display at the Vitra/Eames exhibition.
Furniture represented only a part of couple’s output, however. Ray Eames worked as a textile designer as well as a graphic artist, for example. Working as a team, the Eameses designed buildings and produced several films and slide shows. In addition to their world-famous furniture designs, the exhibition provides visitors with the opportunity to see some of these films as well.
