YOU COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER; PERSONIFICATION AND MASS TAILORING OF MOBILE PHONES
Statement
As consumer interest in individualised products grows, it is all the more important to study the subject. More and more, individualisation concerns industries such as cosmetics, toys, electronics and food. It is also an interesting subject because it has been little studied from the point of view of design. Moreover, Nokia Corporation, for which the project was conducted, provided the opportunity to make a long-term study of product personalization.
Äijälä's diploma work does not discuss personification, mass customization, and "tuning" as phenomena, but one has to realise that this is not just a modern trend. People have always altered and individualised products. The mass production introduced by industrialisation enabled the mass manufacturing of personified and mass tailored products. Henry Ford’s words “the customer can have any colour he wants so long as it’s black” is history.
