IMPROVE - EXPLORING MODES OF LISTENING
Statement
When you IMPROVe your mobile phone, you become one with your immediate sonic surroundings. Capture sonic experiences from your everyday life on your mobile phone, and compose an improvised symphony of social and aesthetic empathy with other IMPROVe'd mobile phones. IMPROVe is an application that sits on your mobile phone. It allows you to mix recorded sounds live in a group situation. Among other locations, IMPROVe'd mobile phones have performed at the Helsinki Central Railway Station, Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, Manchester Industrial Area, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, a forest in the mountains of south Italy and on Danish Radio. The future of IMPROVe-ment includes workshops and public performances with media students on the streets of Helsinki; partnership with grassroots networks for good governance and open source software developers to develop a mobile phone-based interface for citizen journalism; and collaboration with electronic musicians for an enquiry into new forms of music. www.riwid.net/improve
