JADE WARRIOR - FIVE YEARS OF COSTUME DESIGN, REAL OR UNREAL
Statement
The costume design for the film Jade Warrior took many years. As for
many other members of the crew, it was her first feature film; a huge
challenge, but a rewarding experience. In the film, ancient China meets
with modern Finland, and the result is a beautiful love story. The
costumes reflect both The Kalevala and traditional Chinese clothing,
yet they are complete fantasy. The beautiful colour scheme, natural
materials, and intricate details create a background for the costumes.
The colours and shapes of the costumes of modern Finland follow those
of ancient China. The costumes for the leading roles were made in
Finland, while the costumes for the crown scenes were sewn in China
under Vilppunen’s instructions. The film was shot in Finland, Estonia,
and China. It was directed by A.J. Annila and produced by Tero Kaukomaa
and Petri Jokiranta of Blind Spot Pictures.
