CHURCHTEXTILES FOR VIINIKKA CHURCH IN TAMPERE
Statement
My final thesis work consists of the design and manufacture of a series of church textiles for the Viinikka Church in Tampere. Built in the 1930s, the Viinikka Church displays neoclassical features, yet strongly anticipates functionalism. With the nature of the space in mind, I designed four series of church textiles for the four seasons, and the corresponding colours of the ecclesiastical year. I also made one of the series that I designed, the green one. It comprises an altar cloth, a pulvinarium, a lectern cloth, a velum, and a cassock and four identical stoles for the priest. The green series has been used since August 2006. As background work for my designs, I studied the meanings of liturgical textiles in the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church and the origins of Christian symbols. According to the instructions of the Viinikka Parish, the textile series should display the spirit of the 1930s, which required me to study the history, styles, and influences of 20th century church textiles.
Biography
Silja van der Meer graduated with an M.A. in textile design from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in spring 2007. Before her Master’s studies, she completed a degree in design in spring 2005. Her past few years have been coloured by numerous projects, the latest of which involves designing her own collection for the interior fabrics market. To balance the commercial side, she has also studied the design of ecclesiastical textiles. Her work can be seen, for instance, in Viinikka Church in Tampere and in the chapel of Sörnäinen Prison in Helsinki. She currently runs her own business in arts and crafts design.
