INFORMAL ARCHIVING SYSTEMS OF DIGITAL VIDEOS. A PROPOSAL FOR DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Statement
Innovations in information and media technology are created in research institutes and companies, usually for use in professional environments. Yet today, these technologies are also used in homes, leisure activities, hobbies, and other social environments. In my diploma work, I studied the challenge of storing digital media in homes. Through an analysis of the ways in which six people keep their video collections at home, I identified practices in the informal, unprofessional storage of video cassettes. My work also includes a proposal for design principles that accommodate these practices. These principles serve as a starting point for the design of media management and filing systems. My diploma work is part of the Mediaspaces research project in the Media Lab at UIAH.
