THE KINGDOM OF WRECKS
Statement
In a dimly-lit, abandoned room, the raw picture from a video surveillance camera is the only real-time contact through the surface into the world spreading among the structures where houses, rooms, stones, and trees signify the possibility of an alternative place. The unsteady stream of signals transmits rough evidence of the importance of place and presence.
Biography
Graduating from the Master’s programme, Antti-Ville Reinikainen has spent most of his life in the coastal area of Southern Finland. He graduated as a visual artist (B.A.) from the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts in 2005. His works show elements from the Africa of his grandfather’s day, the severity of grey suburbs, TV show heroes, and the perennial creak of an old wooden house by the sea. He went to Minneapolis and dressed up as a beer-drinking bear in The Bear Project and drove a limousine through the Helsinki city centre planting plastic flowers in his work Limo Wreck. Reinikainen enjoys trees, jogging, and walruses.
