TAIMI
Statement
Jella Kujala’s final thesis work for the Department of Art Education comprises the Taimi comic album and a theoretical part dealing with the work of an art teacher. A 44-page full-colour work, Taimi is Kujala’s first long comic album that she has both written and drawn. In the theoretical part, she discusses the development of a teacher’s identity through practical work, and strives to reform her ideas about what makes a good teacher. Creating the comic album has been one of her ways to work on the identity issue.
Biography
Jella Kujala studied art education at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and graduated with an M.A. in 2007. Together with fellow students, she established the art collective Taidetoimisto in 2003. It was commissioned to create a series of eleven paintings for Fortum Oil Oyj. Kujala is particularly interested in comics, both as a form of art and as a form of expression promoting narrative identity. She currently works as an art teacher in Lohja Art School.
