SERIOUS PLAY, A LOOK AT MY PAINTING PROCESS AND ITS FINAL RESULTS
Statement
My final thesis work consists of contemplation and self-reflection on
my paintings and my working process. A painting performance at Galleria
Huuto and an exhibition at Galleria Jangva in autumn 2005 formed a part
of the thesis. My aim was to learn more about my painting process, a
game that is not always so much fun, but hard work. I wanted to see my
process and works from afar, see what I have done, why and how? What is
important in my painting process? What is the structure of my motifs
and images? My aim was to collect my thoughts and my paintings, to see
where I am.
Biography
Known for his colourful paintings, Sami Korkiakoski (b. 1978) is an
expressionist, who threads the middle ground between the
representational and the abstract. His paintings combine a whirlwind of
colours and drawn lines. Some artworks contain text, sometimes legible,
sometimes the wrong way around, or disappearing under thick layers of
paint. The paintings depict Korkiakoski’s inner world. They tell of
feelings, and show images of love, passion, happiness, sorrow, anxiety,
and longing. Turning the canvas is important to Korkiakoski’s painting
process, which is evident as worlds sideways or upside-down.
Korkiakoski has had ten solo exhibitions since 2002 and participated in
numerous group exhibitions. His works can be found in the collections
of Sara Hildén Art Museum and others.
