Statement
My display at MoA07 consists of six series of woven interior fabrics that I designed for Studio Affabre, a Viennese textile studio. Half of my designs were made for Italy, half for the United States. Both markets have their own specialities, which I have applied in my work.
With my designs, I want to communicate the challenges that a textile designer encounters when moving from the domestic to the international textile market. In my work, I explore what happens when a designer who has grown up amidst Finnish design finds herself in ornament-encrusted Vienna, and is given the task of designing patterns for Italian and American customers.
Biography
Maria Härkäpää studied textile design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and will complete her M.A. in spring 2007. She has experience in both textile design, and design and art research. She has written on Finnish printed textile designers and been involved in several textile exhibition projects, the latest of which is an exhibition of the work of Vuokko Nurmesniemi to be opened at the Design Museum in summer 2007. Härkäpää has created designs mostly for interior fabrics and paper products. Since autumn 2005, she has designed interior fabric patterns for the Viennese design studio Affabre, which operates on the international market. During her leisure time, Härkäpää and designer Maija Fagerlund make experimental and unique printed fabric products out of recycled materials under the label Kumma.
