Curator Tomas Ivan Träskman:

The Next Generation and Waking Up the Next Morning

It feels as if the next generation is seldom taken seriously. This generation is defined by a kind of carnivalesque explosion and is destined to a sobering morning after. Maybe the next generation should be taken seriously?

What happens the morning after?
- Is life any different?
- Has quotidian existence changed?
- Does your fridge offer any new surprises?
- Are there new rules for courting?
- How does one celebrate a birthday?
- How does one get buried?

Or, is there a totally different perspective to be adopted? Do people feel any different when you touch them? Do they sound different? What do dreams or desires consist of today and the morning after?

The work of the young people at the University of Art and Design Helsinki points to a collective desire to create new areas of conviviality and to introduce new types of transaction with regard to cultural experiences. The festival is not a space to be walked through. The Masters of Arts Festival is presented as a period of time to be lived through. It is an opening to unlimited discussion.

The theme(s):

IN
The common denominator of the featured themes is the word in. What are the strategies for getting access in a world of networks and connectivity when you are considered inexperienced, ineffective, insecure, and an intruder?

For sure, the strategy is not desperation!

Therefore:

Infuse, Influence, In-between, Include, Innocence, Interpret, Infect, Intrepid, Interact, Interplay, Invert, Independent: here are the means of a generation whose main question is that of affirmative courage and local power.

Together the young people at the University of Art and Design Helsinki create an event that is both hilarious and touching, expressing everything that art and design is capable of. Masters of Arts Festival is a festival of capacity!
