Kirsten Sainio
Industrial and Strategic Design
The living conditions of mentally disabled people have changed in the last decades from an isolated life in institutions to a more and more integrated life in our communities. But the integration is often only physical. Involving a user research this design concept is aiming for neighborhood integration and exchange. The concept is based on the idea of zoning. The common ground is the backyard of the Käpytikka house and its neighborhood buildings in Arabianranta. Dividing the yard into emotional zones offers the residents diversity without getting chaotic all over. The main aim is to bring people out of their homes, to be present in the neighborhood and thus get to know each other casually. Partners and Collaborators: Future Home Institute, ADC Helsinki, Käpytikka BiographyKirsten Sainio was born in Hanover and moved to Berlin in 1997 just after becoming a cabinet–maker. She started studying Product Design at Kunsthochschule Berlin in 1998. Marrying a Finn and having a first child together in 1999 made her and her family move up north to Helsinki in summer 2002. She continued her studies at UIAH in the Department of Industrial and Strategic Design. Having graduated in 2005 she is staying with her two children and husband in Finland. Contact:
