Emptiness and Silence in the Painting Process

As I paint I want to enter a special frame of mind where the outer world does not disturb my work. I call that frame of mind "silence." The goal of my diploma work was to better understand this experience of silence and furthermore my own creative work. In my works I aspire to express my subtle and ephemeral experience of silence, among other things, using a painting technique where I combine a thin water colour with a translucent oil paint on coarse linen.
My diploma work Emptiness and Silence in the Painting Process contains nine oil paintings that were exhibited at the Media Centre Lume gallery in March 2005.

Biography

In addition to her studies, Anu Kauhaniemi has participated in exhibitions, worked in residency programmes in Paris and West Africa, and founded a collective called Taidetoimisto with her fellow students. Her main passion is painting, but she is also interested in bringing different disciplines of art together in her work. In addition to art she has studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology and worked several years as a designer in an architectural practice.
