Art as the expression of the experiences and culture of the deaf
Independent

My diploma work deals with a minority art; the art of the deaf, the characteristics and viewpoints linked to it. In my work I examine pieces of art that are based on sign language and the culture of the deaf; the way they represent deafness, the culture of the deaf, their identity and experiences and also what are the integral things and attributes in sign language art.
In addition to other deaf artists' works, I explore my own work. They contain characteristics that mirror deafness and the culture of the deaf, and are typical of sign language.
My work consists of three parts. The first one is about the community, culture and background of deaf people. The second part deals with the art of the deaf and the third one is about my own work.

Biography

I have studied in the Department of Art Education at the University since 1999. In parallel with my studies I have worked part–time in the cultural unit of the Finnish Association of the Deaf, and I have also conducted workshops. In my work I have explored art education for sign language speakers and art made by deaf people in Finland. My interest in art about deafness and in art by the deaf was awakened when I was an exchange student in the Gallaudet University in Washington DC in 2001. My other passions are travel and culture.
