Press release April 20th 2006 Masters of Arts Festival brings thirty first-rate lecturers from Finland and abroad to University of Art and Design HelsinkiThe anticipated seminar series of the University of Art and Design Helsinki’s Masters of Arts Festival offers fresh perspectives on design, urban culture, creativity and architecture. The seminar series is kicked off by the Design Radicals seminar, moderated by Katja Lindroos. Among others, French Inga Sempé, who has designed for Capellini, Ligne Roset and Baccarat, as well as Jaime Jayon, a ground-breaking pioneer of art and design, have their say. Philosopher Esa Saarinen challenges the audience with new thoughts about creativity and life in The Creative Life seminar. In the seminar’s discussion segment young creative virtuosos - a number of whom are graduating masters of arts participating in the Masters of Arts Festival’s exhibition - share their thoughts with Saarinen. The Culture of In-Between Spaces seminar takes a look at the nature of indefinable spaces and the phenomena born in these spaces. Food for thought is served by the co-ordinator of independent culture house network Trans Europe, Birgitta Persson, the developer of various culture organisations and events, media artist and curator Juha Huuskonen as well as professor Laura Kolbe who swears by the concept of urbanité. Moderating the seminar is urban culture all-rounder Elukka Eskelinen. Lead by researchers, experts, curators and art dealers, The Creative Fountain seminar explores the University of Art and Design Helsinki’s role in the development of Finnish culture. Moderated by Pekka Toivanen, the seminar examines research as the foundation of know-how, an artistically varied environment as the accelerator of creative thinking and internationality as the source of creativity. The Mood and Atmosphere in Architecture seminar is about the force of architecture in creating new experiences. The speakers in the seminar are the curator of daring architecture exhibitions, professor Jeffrey Kipnis - who has been active in his own creative work as well – in addition to Kivi Sotamaa, equally adept in architecture, design, urban planning and art, and also the acclaimed ALA-architect Samuli Woolston. The moderator of the seminar is Mark Isitt, the editor-in-chief of the Swedish Forum magazine. The seminars can be attended free of charge, but one must register beforehand at the www.mastersofarts.fi website. Registration has begun.
